Supporting SEN Children in the School Holidays

Updated: May 12

School holidays are not always as much fun as we would like for our SEN children, the lack of routine, structure and predictability can make it a stressful time for all involved.

Here are a few tips that have helped our family really make the most of the time off school.

ree

Routine & Structure - I try to keep as much of our daily routine and structure as possible.  Giving my children as much predictability as possible keeps them better regulated and much happier.

Days out - We keep days out to the same school window of 9 am - 4 pm.  We avoid doing too much in one day so not to over stimulate them and burn them out before having to return back to school.

Timetable- We talk about our week and what we would like to do.  The children help build the timetable so they know what we are doing and when.  We get our clothes ready the night which really helps my daughter who struggles with SPD (sensory processing disorder)

I recommend the use of visual aids or simply sharing a few pictures of where you are going and with who, this helps children know what to expect, and prepare, reducing anxiety.

Meal times - SEN children thrive on regular schedules so keeping meal times consistent can provide a sense of structure and predictability making meal time more enjoyable for the whole family..

Bedtime - I avoid late nights and keep to our regular bedtimes. SEN children often need more sleep to help regulate themselves and be ready for the day ahead.

Another bonus is that you don't have to get the children back into school bedtime routines.

Social Integration - We plan activities that provide opportunities for social interaction, such as play dates or group outings.  This is to reduce any potential social skill regression.

I hope you find this helpful. If you need more help and support please drop me a line and I'd be more than happy to help.
